Unveiled at Watches & Wonders Genève 2025, Piaget presents its new women’s watch collection. As the name Sixtie suggests, the new product is inspired by the glamorous and free-spirited style of the 1960s.
In keeping with the Piaget family’s motto of “Always strive for perfection and better than that,” the Maison launched a groundbreaking new type of jewelry watch in 1969 at Baselworld, which it named the “21st Century Collection.” One of the creations from this time was the Swinging Sautoir, a watch design that reinterpreted the long chain-shaped necklace, also known as the sautoir. Inspired by the glamorous lifestyle of the jet-set in the 1960s and 1970s, it elegantly indicated the time by literally swinging along a woman’s slender neckline using precious materials and jewelry-making know-how. In particular, the shape of the watch head (case) with thinly cut colored stones (ex. malachite, lapis lazuli, tiger eye, mother of pearl, etc.) set on the dial was unique. It had a so-called trapezoid shape that paid homage to a dress design by Yves Saint Laurent, and appealed with a distinct personality that was clearly differentiated from the existing round, oval, and square shapes.
Piaget’s new women’s watch collection, Sixty, is directly inspired by the company’s trapeze-shaped jewelry replica watches. The Swinging Sautoir, released last year, could be transformed into a wristwatch by removing the pendant at the bottom of the gel and attaching a strap. In a way, that design became the foundation for the Sixty collection launched this year. The trapeze-shaped case, which is wide at the top and narrows towards the bottom, gives off a very unique impression at first glance. It is definitely more eye-catching because it is different from circles or squares. At first glance, it reminds me of a cobra’s head. It is an amazing coincidence that this year is the Year of the Snake.
The new Sixty collection offers a relatively wide range of options for women, including stainless steel, a two-tone version using steel and pink gold, an all-pink gold bracelet, and a gem-set version with diamonds. The four versions have the same size, 29 x 25.3 mm, and a slim thickness of 6.5 mm. The secret to its thinness is the in-house time-only quartz caliber 57P developed and produced by Piaget. As a traditional master of ultra-thin watches, they could have developed an ultra-thin manual movement, but they compromised in order to present it at a more accessible price point. On the other hand, it is the result of considering the needs of many women who find mechanical movements annoying.
The Sixty collection also has a unique bracelet link design. It uses square links and rounded links together to create a strong yet feminine and elegant feel. It also feels good on the wrist when worn. Like the 1960s jewelry watches that inspired the collection, it is a watch that seems to blur the line between watches and jewelry, but at the same time, it has a wearable feel like jewelry, but on the contrary, it has a luxurious feel, embracing the conflicting charms. Although there are not many versions yet, it is expected that more diverse follow-up versions will be added in the future based on this lineup.
